Fuelcards.co.uk motoring news: 73% would 'inform' on elderly drivers
11/03/2010
Three in four people (73 per cent) would report on elderly relatives or friends if they were concerned about the state of their driving, according to a new survey.
An online poll conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) also found that 68 per cent of people think roads would be made safer by the introduction of a mandatory test for drivers over 70 years old.
Meanwhile, 77 per cent of respondents said that young drivers bear more of a road safety risk than their older counterparts, Fuelcard holders may be interested to learn.
Neil Greig, IAM Director of Policy and Research, described the suggested retesting at 70 as “a mammoth administrative task with little road safety benefit”.
He said: “The IAM believes we need to reassure the public that older drivers do not represent a disproportionate risk.
“Eight per cent of drivers are over 70 and they are involved in around four per cent of injury crashes. But 15 per cent of drivers are in their teens and 20s and they are involved in 34 per cent of injury crashes - a far higher number."
