Fuelcards.co.uk manufacturer news: Toyota warns about faulty engines

02/07/2010

Japanese car manufacturer Toyota have warned of potential faults with the engines of around 270,000 cars it has sold worldwide.

This figure includes the luxury Lexus.

Toyota believe the engines of the affected cars could stall while being driven – but none have not yet been recalled.

Toyota has already recalled more than 10 million vehicles globally since last September.

A spokeswoman for the firm said some vehicles might have a problem with the valve spring in their engines, which could cause engine failure.

No accidents had been reported, the spokeswoman added.

The defectiveV8 and V6 engines had been installed in eight top line models including some hybrids, several Lexus models as well as Crown sedans.

New sales figures show that Toyota car sales in Japan have increased by 26.7 per cent on a year ago. Nevertheless Toyota shares were down by more than per cent on Thursday.

Securities analyst Yoshihiko Tabei  Kazaka said: “Investors would not be too perturbed, because if a recall occurred, costs would be limited.”

He added: “Recalls were not usually viewed negatively as long as they were carried out swiftly after problems emerged.”

In related news, production of the new Toyota Auris officially began on June 28.
