Fuelcards.co.uk industry news: On the buses

06/07/2010

An additional £15 million funding for the development of low carbon buses has been announced by Transport Minister Norman Baker.

The new funds will extend the existing Green Bus Fund, which was launched to promote the use of low carbon buses by bus companies and local authorities by making funds available for bidding.

Business minister Mark Prisk said: “This investment will help us deliver our commitment to build a low-carbon economy which will boost economic growth as well as help meet our ambitious climate change targets.”

Last week, the government’s Committee on Climate Change published a new report into the UK’s progress on carbon emissions. It highlighted a distinct shift towards carbon-efficient models.

Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said: “The Committee’s report shows that industry has made significant strides in reducing CO2 emissions.”

Nevertheless, he claimed, further incentives are needed to encourage further uptake of low carbon vehicles.
