Fuel Card News Motoring Updates: A third struggle with hire cars’ basic controls

13/07/2010

One third of people who hire a car struggle with its basic controls, according to a new poll.

The recent poll of 2,000 people by Kwik-Fit has suggested that men are more likely to be confused than women when it comes to using the controls in hire cars.

According to the research, people in the 18-34 age-group struggle the most with 48 per cent admitting to some degree of confusion.  In contrast, only 33 per cent of over-65s face these difficulties.

The biggest difficulty reported by 47 per cent of respondents is opening the petrol cap.

Eighteen per cent have difficulty starting the car, while other problems highlighted in the poll include struggling to find the handbrake, and issues with unlocking the doors.

Kwik-Fit chief executive Ian Fraser said: “The controls in a car can differ hugely from one manufacturer to another – and sometimes even between models of the same manufacturer.”

In other motoring news, an online poll by the 2010 Bridgestone Eco Rally has suggested that 23 per cent of people in the UK would not consider buying or driving an eco-friendly vehicle.
