Fuel Cards News Motoring Updates: Fuel duty hikes could lead to economy ‘domino effect’
15/07/2010
A national petition by The Fuelcard Company has highlighted the true impact fuel duty hikes could have on the wider economy.
The consequences of fuel tax rises for the commercial vehicle industry could have a domino effect, as the UK eventually faces steep rises in the price of every day goods, a scarcity of fresh food, and even the losses of many jobs.
A call has gone out to the Government to support the transport industry which has seen fuel duty increases totalling 15 percent during the recession, with further tax hikes of five percent on the way.
If ministers do nothing to intervene, the Fuelcard Company suggests that these rises could lead to transportation companies being forced out of business and major transportation routes being deserted.
Jakes de Kock is the company’s Marketing Director. He warned: “The UK’s record high level of diesel duty doesn’t just hit British hauliers, it also hits UK competitiveness and raises the price of everything we buy in the shops.
“When will the Government begin to recognise that travel is not a luxury for many in this country but a daily necessity?”
Meanwhile, The Fuelcard Company is taking its national petition directly to commercial vehicle drivers. The Fuelcard Roadshow is a six-week tour of the UK’s biggest truck stops, which will give drivers the chance to swap their signature for a BBQ burger.
