19/07/2010

VW Group has announced plans to build a new auto production plant in Eastern China with the capacity to produce up to 300,000 vehicles a year.

Carmaker chiefs herald the site in Yizheng as a major part of its plans to double its production capacity by 2013/14, to three million vehicles, and also meet growing demand from Chinese customers.

Production will begin at Yizheng in 2013.  The contracts were signed primarily by Prof Dr Jochem Heizmann, a member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft with responsibility for Group Production, and Dr Winfried Vahland, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group China.

The new plant will create some 4,000 direct jobs and will feature full production facilities comprising a press shop, body shop, paint shop and assembly hall.

Dr Heizmann said: “China is one of the most important automotive markets of the future and a dynamic growth driver for the Volkswagen Group. The new plant in Yizheng is a central element of [this].”

In other manufacturing news, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has delivered 60 Transporter vans to refrigeration maintenance company Arcus Engineering as part of a £1.7 million deal.
