Fuel Card News Motoring Updates: Highways Agency delivers holiday driving warning
19/07/2010
The Highways Agency, which manages England’s 4,300-mile network of motorways and major A-roads, has urged drivers to factor proper journey planning into their overall holiday preparations as millions of families get ready to head off on their school summer holidays over the next few weeks.
Steve Crosthwaite, head of the Highways Agency’s National Traffic Control Centre, has highlighted ways to avoid unwanted stress and delays as much as possible during the school summer holiday traffic rush.
Tips include avoiding peak travel times, allowing plenty of time for the journey, taking regular breaks and making sure both vehicle and passengers are well-prepared.
The Agency stresses that journey planning is as important, if not more so, than planning the holiday itself in order to ensure the holiday doesn’t get off to a bad start.
Mr Crosthwaite said: “Just a few minutes checking the weather and traffic conditions before you set out can take a lot of hassle out of your journey. Then once you’re on your way, listen to the radio, watch for the motorway message signs and check for updates whenever you take a break.”
In related news, a poll by Kwik-Fit has revealed a third of motorists who hire a car struggle with its basic controls. Examples include difficulties opening the petrol cap, unlocking doors, and in some cases, even locating the handbrake!
