Fuel Card News Motoring Updates: Automotive sector gathers to discuss its national significance
22/07/2010
Senior motoring representatives have met with new MPs at the House of Commons to discuss the economic role of the motoring industry and potential for growth in coming years.
The reception, organised by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Motor Group, was attended by over 200 MPs and senior executives from across the automotive sector.
In addition to demonstrating the significance and diversity of the UK motoring industry, the event highlighted the importance of attracting ‘young talent’ to the industry, which directly employs 800,000 people, with thousands more relying on it for their livelihoods.
It also looked at how the industry will transform with the move to low carbon transportation, and the opportunities this will present.
Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Motor Group, Richard Burden MP, said: "The UK motor industry plays a significant role in the UK economy, manufacturing products that are exported across the globe.
“As the trend toward low carbon vehicles gathers pace, we have the opportunity to position the UK as a global leader both in terms of the vehicles we buy and the technology we produce, leading to long-term economic growth."
In related news, The Fuelcard Company has launched a national petition to get the Government to reduce or stop fuel duty rises and support the vital transport industry.
