Fuelcards News Automotive Updates: Speed cameras no more in Oxfordshire
23/07/2010
All speed cameras across Oxfordshire are to be switched off next week following a move by Oxfordshire County Council to reduce road safety funding by 71 per cent, representing £600,000.
The Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership, the body which coordinates police enforcement across the county, will turn off cameras and also halt mobile phone, seatbelt and drink-driving checks.
Thames Valley Police, a member of the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership, has allegedly admitted that the cuts will lead to more road accidents, according to the Oxford Mail.
The move to switch off cameras will make Oxfordshire the largest speed camera-free area in the country, says the Express.
However, AA president Edmund King said: “If the cameras are just turned off, a minority of drivers may treat Oxfordshire as a race track.”
In other road safety news, the Institute of Advanced Motorists has described the new EU Road Safety Programme (2011-2010) as a “missed opportunity” as the initiative failed to make provision for driver training beyond the learner test.
