Fuel Card News Motoring Updates: IAM: EU road safety programme ‘a missed opportunity’

23/07/2010

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has described the new EU Road Safety Programme as a “missed opportunity” due to the absence of provision for driver training beyond the learner test.

While the institute praised the programme’s encouragement of an EU-wide focus on motorcycle safety, IAM has expressed disappointment that the new road safety initiative has failed to consider both this and training for business drivers.

Neil Greig, IAM Director of Policy and Research, said: “There is convincing evidence that further training makes drivers safer, and could be relatively cost-effective compared to some of the other suggestions which involve massive changes to cars and roads.”

He went on to call for the role of post-test and business driver training to be recognised as part of wider training standards in the UK.

In other news, Oxfordshire will next week become the largest speed camera-free zone in the UK after a decision by the council to reduce road safety funding by 71 per cent.
