Fuel Card News Motoring Updates: Motorists 'clueless' about saving money on running their cars

26/07/2010

Motorists are “clueless” about how they could save on the costs of running a car, according to a national survey by breakdown specialists Autonational Rescue.

The poll of 1,000 adults found that 66 per cent don’t fully understand the importance of checking tyre pressures as a way of saving money.

Despite research showing that the extra fuel cost of driving around on under-inflated tyres can be around five per cent, only 34 per cent of respondents cited checking tyre pressure as ‘vital’ to saving money.

Another top tip from Autonational Rescue was to fill up with fuel more often, but with less fuel , which enables motorists to extend their petrol or diesel usage because it effectively makes their load lighter.

Only seven per cent of survey participants said this method would save them the most amount of money.

Other cost-saving recommendations from the company include switching off air-conditioning when not needed, avoiding carrying unnecessary bulk such as roof-racks, and keeping the vehicle properly-serviced.

In other news, a survey by Ford has revealed that 15 per cent of drivers have postponed servicing their car, despite worries about saving money on fuel .
