Fuel Card News Motoring Updates: £5,000 electric car incentive
28/07/2010
It has been revealed today that from January 2011, motorists buying a new electric car or ultra-low carbon hybrid will receive 25 per cent off the purchase price, equating to a maximum of £5,000.
The Government scheme will be available to both private and business fleet buyers.
The subsidy was announced by the Labour government in 2009 with a promise of 46,000 grants available to car buyers.
However, the new Coalition government has now reduced this to 8,600 grants.
Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said: “The coalition Government is absolutely committed to low carbon growth, tackling climate change and making our energy supply more secure.
“We will review the level of the incentive regularly to ensure that the UK remains competitive and tax payers get value for money.”
Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne added: “Electric and low carbon cars are fun to drive and essential to meet our climate targets.”
In other news, a national survey by Autonational Rescue has suggested that around two-thirds of motorists don’t understand the money and fuel -saving potential of checking tyre pressures regularly.
