Fuel Cards News Motoring Updates: MP says Govt planning pilot fuel duty reductions for remote areas

28/07/2010

A key Government minister has revealed that the Coalition Government is to roll out a pilot scheme to reduce fuel duty in remote areas in the coming months.

In an exclusive interview with the Aberdeen Press and Journal, Treasury Chief Secretary and North MP Danny Alexander has pledged commitment to holding the trial scheme across part of the Highlands and Islands.

It is hoped the scheme will reflect workable benefits of cutting tax on fuel for those drivers who need it most. In this case, they are those living in remote areas who have to drive for a living, those who often have to travel longer distances hence using more fuel , and have limited access to public transport.

The MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, told the publication: “The prime minister and the chancellor have made it clear in the Commons that I am a particular supporter on this. Of course I am.

“And we are working hard within the Treasury to find a way to deliver what I think is essential. I feel optimistic that over the next few months we will have some proposals to put forward.”

However, the MP could not promise this trial will be rolled out before the increase in VAT which will come into force from January 2011.

In other news, The Fuelcard Company has launched a petition to lower fuel duty in another crucial area – the commercial vehicle and transportation industry.

The company has launched a six-week tour of the country’s truck stops to take the campaign directly to those who suffer most from fuel duty hikes – CV drivers and fleets.
